Also included is an original rather tired brown leather sling with quick detach swivel and a very good W. An original cleaning rod is present and the action seems to function well mechanically. The stock actually shows some subtle and rather attractive tiger stripe grain figure through the butt, the buttstock is stamp-numbered matching and also retains very good imperial inspector stamps.
GERMAN WWI MAUSER GEWEHR 98 RIFLE LEATHER ACTION COVER CRACK
The smooth pistolgrip walnut stock and handguard remain in about very good condition showing a very thin 2" hairline crack at the upper tang, overall scattered light to perhaps moderate dings and abrasions. Both the cover and its base are maker-marked "W / CO / DRP" and both bear clear imperial inspector stamps. The locking tab is bent slightly upwards and does not snap completely closed but this is to be expected. The trench cover has mostly toned to a dark gray patina showing areas of light oxidation staining and strong remnants of black enamel finish. All markings remain intact and quite crisp. There is a moderate scuff along the right edge of the triggerguard and the screw heads show some slot wear but this is very unobtrusive. The action and bottom metal are similar showing bright areas mixed with brown freckling, light oxidation staining and some overall minor pinprick pitting. The barrel has mostly toned to a deep brown patina showing some overall light oxidation staining and some scattered fine pinprick pitting.

This is a solid and honest all-matching 1917-dated Gew.98.
